Before it ships: import approval
Almost every vehicle needs an Australian Vehicle Import Approval before it leaves New Zealand. Applications go through the ROVER system and can take several weeks, so apply first. The car also needs to be checked for asbestos. We’ll walk you through both: customs clearance and import approval.

How long it takes
Usually one to two weeks port to port across the Tasman. Your vessel and dates are confirmed by email when you book, and a private tracking link shows each milestone.
Getting it ready
- Wash the underside, wheel arches and engine bay: it’s inspected for biosecurity on arrival.
- Vacuum the interior and boot, and remove all food, plants and outdoor gear.
- Take out personal belongings and photograph the car before collection.
