The Australian costs on top
- GST of 10%, worked out on the customs value plus the cost of shipping and insurance.
- Customs duty, usually 5% of the customs value. Some cars are duty-free under a free trade agreement, depending on where they were made, with evidence of origin.
- Luxury Car Tax on cars above the LCT threshold, which the ATO sets each financial year (there’s a higher threshold for fuel-efficient cars).
- State costs: roadworthy inspection, registration and stamp duty where your state charges it.

Timing matters more than price
