How to measure a caravan or motorhome
- Length. Measure from the back of the van to the tip of the towbar or A-frame. Include a rear spare wheel or bike rack.
- Width. Measure the widest point, usually across the awning rail or the mirrors on a motorhome.
- Height. Measure from the ground to the highest point, including the air conditioner, roof hatches and any aerial or solar panel.
- Multiply. Length × width × height gives the volume in m³. Worked example: 8.5 × 2.4 × 3.1 = 63.2 m³.

Caravan volume and shipping questions
How do I calculate the volume of a caravan for shipping?
Multiply the overall length, width and height in metres: length × width × height. Measure the longest, widest and tallest points, and include the towbar or A-frame, spare wheel, bike racks, roof racks, air conditioner and roof hatches.
What is the minimum volume for shipping a caravan or motorhome?
50 m³ per unit. If your caravan measures less than 50 m³ it is charged on 50 m³. If it measures more, it is charged on the measured volume.
Should I measure with the drawbar?
Yes. Use the overall length including the towbar or A-frame, because that is the space the unit takes on the ship.
How accurate is the estimate?
It uses the same price per m³ and fixed local charges as our live rate card, so it should be close. It is still indicative: Nick confirms the price in writing once the measurements are confirmed, and prices are valid for 14 days.
What is not in the estimate?
Cartage (caravans and motorhomes are quoted separately), NZ GST and any duty, cleaning if MPI fails the first inspection, compliance and registration in New Zealand, and insurance, which we don't arrange.
What about cars, utes and 4WDs?
Cars, vans, utes and 4WDs up to 20 m³ ship at one all-in price per vehicle, so there is nothing to calculate. See car shipping from Australia to New Zealand.
