What we need from you to ship a car to New Zealand
- Paperwork: the purchase invoice or bill of sale (NZ Customs values the car on it), the Australian registration papers, and a copy of your passport or driver licence. Moving to NZ and claiming the Customs concession? Your passport or residence document as well.
- Finance: if there's a loan on the car, the lender's written permission to export it.
- Recalls: any open safety recall done before it ships. NZ won't certify a car with one.
- The car itself: clean inside, outside and underneath for MPI, empty of personal items, about a quarter of a tank of fuel or less, and one key.
The pre-shipment checklist has the full list, ready to print.

Car shipping to New Zealand: your questions
How much does it cost to ship a car from Australia to New Zealand?
Cars, vans, utes and 4WDs up to 20 m³ ship at one all-in price per vehicle, from AUD 3,500. The price depends on the port you load at and the New Zealand port it goes to; the table on this page shows each one. Caravans and motorhomes are priced on size.
How long does it take to ship a car to New Zealand?
Usually one to two weeks port to port on a weekly RoRo sailing. Allow a few more days for receival at the Australian terminal before the ship, and for NZ customs and MPI after it arrives. The sailing schedule page shows the next departures.
What documents do I need to ship a car from Australia to New Zealand?
The purchase invoice or bill of sale, the Australian registration papers, a copy of your passport or driver licence, and the lender's permission to export if there's finance on it. If you're moving to NZ and claiming the Customs concession, also your passport or residence document.
What is included in the price?
Sea freight on a weekly roll-on roll-off sailing, Australian port and export charges, NZ port, customs entry and MPI fees, and pickup within 50 km of the port and delivery to a compliance yard in New Zealand. Not included: NZ GST and any duty, cleaning if MPI fails the first inspection, compliance and registration in New Zealand, and cartage beyond 50 km.
Which ports do you ship from and to?
Cars load weekly at Brisbane, Port Kembla (for Sydney) and Melbourne, with selected sailings from Adelaide and Fremantle. They discharge at Auckland, and we also deliver to Wellington, Lyttelton (Christchurch) and Nelson. Some sailings call there direct and others tranship via Auckland.
Will I pay GST in New Zealand?
Usually yes. NZ GST is 15% of the vehicle's value plus freight and insurance, unless you qualify for a concession as someone moving to New Zealand. Our NZ GST and duty calculator gives an estimate before you ship.
Does my car need to be clean?
Yes. MPI inspects every vehicle on arrival, and one that fails is cleaned and re-inspected at the owner's cost. Clean the inside, outside and underneath before it is collected. Our MPI cleaning checklist shows what they look for.
Can I ship a caravan, motorhome or machinery as well?
Yes. Caravans and motorhomes are priced per cubic metre, plus fixed local charges at each end. Machinery and trucks go RoRo or on a flat rack and are priced from the make, model, dimensions and weight.
Is my car insured while it ships?
Not by us. Phoenix Shipping doesn't sell or arrange insurance, and the shipping line's liability is limited by international rules. We strongly recommend you arrange marine transit cover before the car is collected.
Am I committed when I get a price?
No. A price is free and valid for 14 days. An online booking is a request: Nick confirms the vessel, receival dates, cartage and dimensions by email before anything is committed.
Can I take my car to New Zealand for a holiday and bring it back?
Yes. NZ Customs normally allows a visitor's vehicle in for up to 12 months, either on a Carnet de Passages (from the AA or your motoring club) or with a cash deposit covering the duty and GST, refunded when the car leaves with you. It still goes through MPI, so clean it the same way. Tell us when you book and we'll price the trip both ways.
