Caravans and motorhomes: priced on size
Caravans, motorhomes and campervans are priced per cubic metre, with a 50 m³ minimum per unit, plus fixed local charges at each end. Examples to Auckland:
| From | Per m³ | 50 m³ van | 65 m³ van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brisbane | AUD 80.00 | AUD 4,473 + NZD 630 | AUD 5,673 + NZD 630 |
| Sydney (Port Kembla) | AUD 80.00 | AUD 4,473 + NZD 630 | AUD 5,673 + NZD 630 |
| Melbourne | AUD 80.00 | AUD 4,473 + NZD 630 | AUD 5,673 + NZD 630 |
The NZD amount is the New Zealand local charge per unit, paid in New Zealand dollars. It covers MPI biosecurity fees, customs clearance fees, electronic lodgement fee, vehicle entry (VIN) fee.
Worked example. A Jayco caravan measuring 8.5 m long (with drawbar), 2.4 m wide and 3.1 m high is 63.2 m³. It is charged on 63.2 m³, not the minimum, so measure carefully or send us the make and model.
What else to budget for
- NZ GST: 15% of the vehicle's value plus freight and insurance, unless you qualify for a concession as someone moving to New Zealand. Use our NZ GST and duty calculator.
- Cleaning: MPI inspects every unit on arrival. A unit that fails is cleaned and re-inspected at the owner's cost. Our cleaning checklist shows what they look for.
- Compliance and registration in NZ: entry certification and registration are done after arrival by a certifier you choose.
- Cartage beyond 50 km of the port: quoted when you book.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Measure caravans accurately: every cubic metre over the minimum is charged.
- Book from the port nearest the unit. Brisbane, Port Kembla and Melbourne have weekly sailings.
- Clean it properly before it goes: a failed MPI inspection is the most common surprise cost.

How is a caravan or motorhome priced?
On volume: length × width × height in metres, with a 50 m³ minimum per unit, plus fixed local charges at each end. Measure the caravan including the drawbar and any roof fittings, or give us the make and model and we'll check it against our measurements.
What isn't included?
Cartage beyond 50 km of the port (quoted when you book), cleaning or a second MPI inspection if the unit fails the first, NZ GST and any duty, and compliance and registration in New Zealand.
Will I pay GST in New Zealand?
Usually yes: NZ Customs charges 15% GST on the value of the vehicle plus freight and insurance. People moving to New Zealand who have owned and used their vehicle overseas may qualify for a concession. See our guide to moving home to NZ.
How long is the price valid?
Online prices are valid for 14 days and are confirmed when you book, against space on the sailing and the unit's actual dimensions.
