How to compare car shipping quotes

Two quotes for the same car can look very different and still not be comparable. Here is what a Phoenix price includes, what comes on top, and the questions to ask any shipper.

Our price is one lump sum

To ship a car, van, ute or 4WD up to 20 m³ from Australia to New Zealand, you pay one price per vehicle. From Brisbane to Auckland it is AUD 2,850. That is the number on your quote, and it is what we charge for shipping. There is no list of extra port, customs or handling lines added afterwards. The things that come on top are the ones in the table below, and they are listed on every quote.

Cars from New Zealand to Australia work the same way: collection and delivery to Auckland port (Auckland metro area), export clearance, terminal handling, shipping to the east coast of Australia, Australian arrival port charges, the cargo reporting fee, quarantine inspection and attendance fees and Australian import clearance are in the price. Cleaning and re-inspection if the vehicle fails its quarantine inspection, and Australian taxes (GST, any duty and luxury car tax), are on top.

Caravans and motorhomes are priced on volume (length × width × height, 50 m³ minimum) plus fixed local charges at each end. Check the volume with the caravan m³ calculator.

Questions to ask every shipper

  • Is the price per vehicle, or per cubic metre? Per-m³ prices need your exact dimensions, and the total moves with them.
  • Is collection from the auction yard, dealer or your home included? And how far?
  • Are export clearance and terminal handling in the price?
  • Are the port charges at both ends in the price?
  • Are the customs entry and the MPI or quarantine fees in the price?
  • Are GST and duty shown separately? They should be, and you should be told roughly how much.
  • What happens if the vehicle fails inspection? Who pays for cleaning, and how much notice do you get?
  • Is insurance included, or is it up to you?
  • How long is the price valid, and who confirms it?

Compare totals, not line items

Work out the full cost of getting the vehicle onto the road in New Zealand: the shipping price, plus NZ GST and any duty, plus delivery from the port to your compliance yard, plus compliance, plus insurance. A shipping quote that looks cheaper but leaves out customs, port charges or cartage usually isn't.

Comparing quotes: your questions

Is the Phoenix price really all-in?

For cars, vans, utes and 4WDs up to 20 m³ to New Zealand, it is one lump sum per vehicle that covers freight, the port and customs charges at both ends, the MPI inspection and cartage within 50 km of the port. The only things on top are the items listed on this page, such as NZ GST and cleaning if MPI fails the first inspection.

Why do quotes for the same job differ so much?

Usually because they include different things. One quote may be freight only, another may add port charges, and a third may add customs and cartage. Line the inclusions up before you compare totals.

Are taxes included in your price?

No. NZ GST and any duty are paid in New Zealand, and Australian taxes are paid on imports into Australia. They are set by the government, not by us. Use our calculator to estimate them before you book.

What if MPI fails my vehicle on arrival?

The vehicle is cleaned and re-inspected, and the cleaning is at the owner's cost. It is the most common surprise cost, which is why we publish a cleaning checklist.

How long is a price valid?

Online prices are valid for 14 days and are confirmed by Nick in writing before anything is committed.
